Magnesium chloride (30%) solution is mainly used as a dust suppressant on gravel roads. When applied to a freshly leveled road, its hygroscopic¹ properties allows the capture of moisture in the air and helps retain dust which greatly reduces the loss of aggregates and increases safety.

During the winter, magnesium chloride 22% solution is used as an anti-icing and pre-wetting agent for de-icing road salt. Magnesium chloride in solution improves and activates the power of road salt.

Magnesium chloride is also utilized as a liquid impact energy attenuator.

Basic properties of a high-performance product

Magnesium chloride (MgCl₂), calcium chloride (CaCl₂) and sulfonated lignin are the primary dust suppressant and stabilizing products of North America for granular surfaces. These products are highly efficient due to inherent difficulties related to various climate conditions. The temperature, degree of humidity, precipitation and more particularly the type of gravel and its granulometry, are factors which are taken into consideration during the evaluation of different products when comparing to others.
